What is confidence?
Confidence is a sense of certainty that you will be successful at something. It can also refer to the belief that you have in yourself and your abilities. Confidence is a state of mind that a person gets into when they are convinced that they can perform a task and not be judged. It does not matter what the mission is – it could be something as simple as walking across a room or something as complex as running for public office – if you feel sure about your abilities and your potential to succeed, you feel confident.
Why is confidence necessary?
Confidence is an essential part of life. It helps us get through everyday tasks and makes us feel better about ourselves. However, sometimes we lack confidence because we think we’re not good enough.
Feeling confident is like a superpower. It can make your day, make you feel invincible, and give you the ability to achieve anything you want in life.
It gives us the courage to take the risks we need to be successful. Confidence makes you more attractive to other people. It increases your self-esteem and resilience.
How do you build confidence?
The human brain is designed to learn through repetition. Practicing the guitar every day, for example, allows you to get better at the instrument. One of the best ways to develop confidence is by practicing something again and again.
Developing confidence is the same process as creating any other skill – practicing it repeatedly until it becomes automatic. Practice makes us better at whatever we do, and it also builds up our confidence.
Once you develop confidence, it stays with you as a memory. Just like a good memory creates good feelings, the memory of confidence creates feelings of certainty. You go in a resourceful state, which helps you achieve success. There is no scope for doubt in this state.
How do you lose your confidence?
Is it by trying to be something you’re not? Or, maybe, you just stop trying? Confidence is a funny thing. Perhaps it was a time when you felt great about yourself and the world. Then, something happened. Maybe a time where you thought you were a little more confident than you actually were. Or, perhaps, it was something more significant. Maybe you lost a job, or your parents died, or you got fired from a job you worked really hard at. The point is, there are lots of things that can make us feel less confident than we used to.
Confidence is a feeling, and it must be available when you need it.
Suppose you are competing in a prestigious competition like the Olympics, and you start thinking about what will happen if you fail. Your brain will begin showing you all the negative pictures of you being failed. It will push back the memories of your past successes, and hence you will have no access to the feelings of confidence. You will go into a state of doubt and worry. Your body will follow the emotions, and your chances of failure will increase. Sometimes a judgmental remark made by an authority figure like your boss, teacher, or coach can also trigger negative thoughts which rob off your confidence.
How to get your confidence back?
Even if you lose your confidence, the good news is that it is there, at the back of your mind. You need to uncover it. It is buried below the memories of failure and bad events. Using the Neuro-linguistic Programming technique to get rid of painful memories or a nagging, demoralizing voice, you can regain confidence. I have explained the whole process in another video. I will share the link to that video under this post.
How to be confident about something even if you are doing it for the first time?
We have already seen that confidence is a feeling and puts you in a state of confidence wherein you feel certain about achieving success. Even if the task you are doing is new, and you don’t have memories of success, you can create confidence! How? Simple. The feeling is a feeling. You can make it using any memory! So, if you remember the things about which you feel highly confident, you will experience confidence building in your body. Once you go into a state of confidence, think about the new task. You will notice that your feelings towards the new task have changed. Thus you can always transfer the feelings of confidence towards a task to another task, a new task.
So what is a takeaway?
- Confidence is a sense of certainty that you will be successful at something.
- Confidence is a feeling that puts you in a state wherein your probability of success increases.
- You become confident by accessing the memories of past successes. Of course, this happens subconsciously.
- When you lose confidence, your memories of confidence are pushed back by new unpleasant memories.
- You can get back your confidence by removing unpleasant memories and uncovering the memories of confidence.
- You can also feel confident about a task, even if you are doing it for the first time. You just need to go into a state of confidence by accessing the memories of some other task.
- When you feel good about yourself, everything else is easy!
